Patton Never Said That
General George S. Patton did not say, “Politicians are the lowest form of life on earth. Liberal Democrats are the lowest form of politicians.” This is yet another example of MAGA fake news.
The actual quote, “Politicians are the lowest form of life on earth,” is attributed to Stuart Chase in his 1948 book The Proper Study of Mankind. Chase was commenting on politicians in general, not singling out any particular political party. His book focused on introducing social sciences to college campuses. By 1952, Chase was critical of both Soviet communism and McCarthyism in the United States.
The full version of the fabricated quote appeared much later, in Charles Province’s 1983 book The Unknown Patton. Province provided no sources or footnotes to support the claim—he simply made it up.
The Virginia Military Institute Archives, which hold Patton’s personal papers, have found no record of him saying this and have emphatically stated it is highly unlikely he ever did.
Brian Sobel, author of The Fighting Pattons, also confirmed that he found no original source material indicating Patton ever made such a statement.
While Patton did express disdain for politics and politicians in general, he showed little interest in or understanding of party politics. In fact, Patton once remarked that he had “no more gift for politics than a cow has for fox hunting.”
Patton’s political views were more nuanced. He described his stance as “a sort of reactionary royalism” and expressed a dislike for “grafting politicians,” but he did not specifically target liberal Democrats.
It’s worth noting that Patton made some controversial political statements, particularly concerning denazification efforts after World War II, but these do not align with the quote in question.
In conclusion: This quote is falsely attributed to Patton and does not accurately reflect his known political views or statements.
